Administration Reveals Federal Employee Layoffs as Shutdown Approaches Three-Week Mark

Administration officials disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

Although the official provided no details on which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union for federal workers announced that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to contest the moves in court.

This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an pretext to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide essential functions to communities across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be ended soon.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for rejecting the GOP proposal, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

Federal workers’ final pay that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to fulfill their duties and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. “Starting next week, American service members, many of whom live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions sought a court injunction to prevent the administration from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Additionally, a court official ordered the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, affected agencies, and whether any government staff had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown limits the authority of the administration to conduct terminations, referencing guidance that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the funding expired.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs took place on the same day that federal workers received only a incomplete payment covering the final days of September but excluding the start of the current month, since funding expired at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in Congress and the White House have failed to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
