An informant has disclosed an official investigation that British authorities failed to secure sensitive equipment enabling the militant group to track down local individuals who worked with allied troops.

Information Leak Endangers Thousands at Risk

The whistleblower, called Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the security lapse were told to move homes and change their mobile numbers to avoid detection from militant forces.

Members of Parliament are looking into the Conservative government's handling of a catastrophic breach of personal details involving almost nineteen thousand Afghans who had requested to come to the UK to flee the regime.

How the Leak Happened

An electronic document including their personal data, such as identities, phone numbers and sometimes relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by a staff member stationed at UK special forces headquarters in early 2022.

The breach was discovered only in August 2023, when identities of several individuals who had requested to move to the UK were posted on online platforms.

Aftermath of the Security Lapse

Preliminary research provided to the inquiry indicated that no fewer than forty-nine kin and colleagues of individuals impacted by the leak had been murdered.

A gag order concerning the incident was enacted in August 2023 and prevented any information concerning it from public disclosure until recently.

Protective Actions

Due to legal constraints, the source and the aid group she was working with told individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “concerns that mobile communications had been intercepted”.

“Our suggestion was that they moved when possible and changed their contact details. Those were the primary information that, if the Taliban obtained these details, would lead to identification and capture,” the source testified.

Contested Findings

The source contested that internal investigation conducted by a retired civil servant had been mistaken to state that the obtaining of the dataset by the regime was “minimally impact current risk levels”.

“The important fact is that affected people are not confronting militant forces; they are in hiding. The primary issue involves past work history.”

Person A described terrible treatment experienced by concerned people, involving electric shock torture, waterboarding, and severe beatings.

“Instances include toddlers who have had limbs fractured to try to get the family to reveal locations,” she testified.
