Britain's Fabio Wardley Poised to Become World Boxing Champion as Oleksandr Usyk Gives Up Championship
England's heavyweight contender is set to be promoted to world boxing champion after Oleksandr Usyk opted to give up his world title
This situation arises after Usyk told boxing authorities he would not proceed with a mandatory title defence against Wardley
Boxing Organization's Position
The championship body announced that Usyk had "elected to relinquish his title after thoughtful consideration"
Usyk still holds the WBA, WBC and IBF heavyweight titles, having defeated Daniel Dubois at the national stadium in July to become a two-time undisputed heavyweight champion
He initially achieved the complete unified champion in spring 2024 by overcoming Tyson Fury, before vacating another belt five weeks later and opting out of facing the mandatory challenger
"Organization head Gustavo Olivieri praised the Ukrainian fighter in a statement"
"Officials expressed its deep appreciation and respect to Oleksandr Usyk, an perfect record holder across weight classes"
"His achievements mark one of the most impressive and memorable of the recent fighting history"
The boxing body stated that its organization will always welcome the fighter and his management"
Title Reign
Usyk secured the world title in 2021 by beating the British star and went on to protect his title repeatedly
In July, the WBO had ordered negotiations for a mandatory defence against interim champion Joseph Parker, only for a champion's back problem to require rescheduling of the fight
British Fighter's Journey
But Wardley, 30, won the provisional belt from the New Zealander with a huge upset in the 11th round at London's O2 Arena last month and was mandated to face Usyk before the end of September
The championship body still needs to verify Wardley's promotion but his promoter Frank Warren believes it is a done deal
"England has a new heavyweight world champion and a emerging fighting personality"
"Among the most remarkable journeys during my long career as a boxing representative and I could not be more pleased for Wardley"
"Significant bouts in the future for 2026 as he maintains his title and creates a true legacy in the boxing world"
The champion started fighting aged 20, developing through alternative boxing and has had just 21 professional fights
