California's Governor States He Is Considering a 2028 Presidential Run
The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has indicated that he intends to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections are over.
"Yeah, I would be lying otherwise," Newsom remarked when questioned about giving serious thought to a campaign for president following the 2026 elections. "I'd just be lying. And I'm not."
Newsom's time in office as governor concludes in January 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he noted that any choice is a long way off.
"The future will decide," he said.
Growing Prominence as a Political Adversary
Newsom has come to the forefront as a notable critic of the former president's team, using his online platforms and advocating for a initiative that would increase the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to redistricting by Republicans. This move has drawn criticism from adversaries.
Federal Funding Dispute
The former president's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that Newsom is indifferent about the state's residents in a weekend interview on Fox News. The secretary disclosed plans to cut government money from California and suggested eliminating the state's ability to provide CDLs.
"I intend to cut $160m from the state," he said, following a recent tragic collision in California involving an undocumented commercial driver that resulted in three deaths and casualties.
The governor's team noted that the national authorities had approved the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to secure a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
The transportation secretary had before stated he was blocking $40m from the state for not enforcing linguistic standards for commercial drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Team
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, still doesn't understand U.S. regulations," his administration said in a recent statement responding to the secretary's comments. "For now, unlike this clown, we rely on data: California CDL holders had a accident mortality rate significantly lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
Public Opinion and Future Prospects
A this month's survey showed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters believed that Newsom ought to campaign for president in 2028. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has increased to an average of about one-third from previous levels, while his disapproval has dropped from an typical level of previous highs to current figures.
Some time ago, Newsom commented while traveling several swing states that he had "uncertainty" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He mentioned his personal struggles, including being found to have a learning disability at the young age of five.
"The notion that a person who had modest test scores, who has ongoing difficulties with text, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, extraordinary," he stated. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the U.S. citizens."
