Everyday tennis enthusiasts are being offered the chance to win one million Australian dollars when they take on elite players - featuring world number one the Spanish champion - in a single-point showdown before January's Australian Open

Tournament officials of the Melbourne major have revealed the Seven-Figure Quick-Fire Competition, which will pair 10 amateur players against elite athletes in a knockout tournament at the Australian Open venue

The Unique Event Will Work

Players will play 'the classic hand game' to determine who takes the serve or return position, and the player who wins the point will advance to the following stage

The victor of the event will take home approximately half a million pounds

For comparison, players who made it to the penultimate round of the main draw competitions in the 2025 Australian Open won over a million Australian dollars

The New York major hosted a revamped, independent mixed doubles tournament in the eighth month which motivated top singles players to take part, with the champions receiving $1m

The Melbourne tournament held its inaugural quick-fire event this year, but the prize fund was sixty thousand Australian dollars and it received minimal attention

One top competitor was the sole elite competitor competing, and his run came to an end when he directed the one and only serve permitted failing to clear the net in his last eight match

Organizers have not said exactly how the event will operate, but it is anticipated to emulate a similar format to this year's edition

The professionals will be allowed to make one service and the non-professionals twice - as is the norm in standard play

While it is uncertain how the bracket will work, there will be several competitive phases and the site will be the main stadium rather than the smaller Kia Arena

The concluding rounds will be held in a evening slot instead of 1pm local time

Entry Requirements

Local players - or overseas competitors who have enrolled with Tennis Australia - can compete in 'One Point Slam' competitions at their local tennis clubs

The winners of the grassroots tournaments will then go into a random pairing, with one amateur player from every state and territory picked to compete in the 'grand finale' in a evening match on Wednesday, 14 January

There will also be a preliminary competition in December which everyday players, aspiring competitors, famous personalities and athletic celebrities can participate in

It commences on early January and the pair of champions will go into Wednesday's 'grand finale' with the other eight amateurs and elite competitors

Competition planners stated there were "further celebrities to be unveiled imminently", while the event portal mentioned "well-known figures" would be taking part
