Crew Member Discloses Depression After Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.

The mission was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the landing.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her studies and astronaut training to the personal milestone of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning championing the cause of victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Now, eight months after reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she said.

She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had resulted from the flight, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the edge of outer space.
