A budget proposal that would terminate the most extended funding lapse in the nation's history is heading to the House of Representatives for a decisive ballot on midweek.

On the 43rd day of the legislative standoff, congressional members are coming back to Washington to decide whether to approve a upper chamber proposal that would finance federal agencies for the next eight weeks.

Republican leadership voiced optimism the spending plan would pass through the lower chamber, regardless of their narrow majority. But leading opposition members vowed to oppose it.
