International Committee of the Red Cross Accompanies Hamas in Recovery for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) stated that its personnel joined Hamas officials into zones of the Gaza Strip still under IDF control to facilitate the hunt for the remains of Israeli hostages.

Ceasefire Agreements and Captive Bodies Handover

Under the truce negotiated by the United States, which began on October 10, the group is required to return the bodies of all Israeli hostages as soon as possible. As a reciprocal measure, Israel has consented to hand over the remains of 15 Palestinians for each Israeli.

Hamas has so far returned the bodies of 15 of those taken hostage but zero in the last five days, as a portion of those remains are thought to be in areas beyond the yellow line marking Gaza’s ceasefire.

ICRC Involvement as Neutral Intermediary

“At the request of the involved sides, the Red Cross accompanied a party to the conflict as the group searched for the remains of the deceased individuals past the IDF-designated ‘yellow line’,” said a spokesperson for the organization.

She continued: “The parties to the hostilities established the procedures of the operation and delegated the Red Cross to act as a neutral intermediary. We was not involved in those negotiations.”

The official further explained: “Our team was did not participate in the search for the bodies nor does it take part in the retrieval of remains.”

Recently, the US president delivered a two-day demand to the organization. “Hamas is going to have to start returning the remains of the hostages who died, including two Americans, promptly, or the additional nations participating in this significant truce will take action,” he posted on his online channel.

As the 48-hour deadline neared, the group, accompanied by the Red Cross, teamed up with Egyptian teams, who were granted permission by Israel to look for remains past the boundary marking the Israeli military’s pullback inside the territory. An Israeli spokesperson said the Egyptian team would use excavator machines and vehicles in the search.

Yet, the attempt to find the bodies has proved challenging from the beginning, given the presence of an estimated 60m tonnes of rubble across the territory, where, as per health officials, at least 10,000 residents are listed as missing, trapped under the debris.

The group has stated it does not know the precise whereabouts of all the bodies, saying it has been unable to communicate with several of its teams that had been holding the captives and were reportedly eliminated during military strikes.

In contrast, an Israeli government spokesperson claimed that the organization was aware of the locations of the remains. “If Hamas exerted greater effort, they would be able to retrieve the remains of our hostages,” the official said.

US Stance and Disarmament Talks

While the US president has conceded that a portion of the bodies are hard to reach, he said that “others they can hand over now and, for some reason, they are not.”
