Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the player will be OK after being shot in central New York in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will come through this without issue.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the attack on the player. The reason behind the incident is currently under review and officials stated it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.
The shooting happened in the early morning on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to Bellevue Hospital after being shot in the abdomen, police said. The shooter fled the scene.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since learning of the incident. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a newborn.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but It is reassuring that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in March and was anticipated to become an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
