Nicolas Sarkozy Preparing to Release Prison Memoir Detailing His 20 Days Incarcerated

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a memoir next month titled A Prisoner’s Diary, detailing his time spent in custody.

The revelation was made just 11 days following the ex-leader was released while he appeals the guilty verdict on charges of unlawful coordination in a case to secure presidential race money linked to the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Prison Experience: Inner Thoughts

“Behind bars there is nothing to see, and activities are scarce,” he notes in an extract, indicating the account is more about his thoughts while in isolation rather than a broader observation of the strained and crisis-hit correctional facilities in the country.

“Quiet is absent, which is missing at the prison, where one hears constant sound,” he states. “The noise persists relentlessly. Yet, similar to barren lands, one’s inner world is strengthened in prison.”

Court Appearance: Recounting the Hardship

During his plea for freedom, Sarkozy participated via screen from his cell, describing his time inside as exhausting. He expressed in court: “I must acknowledge to all the prison staff, who are exceptionally humane, and who have made this nightmare bearable – since it’s deeply troubling.”

“I didn’t expect that at 70 years of age, I’d be in prison. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, deeply straining. It leaves a mark every inmate as it’s exhausting.”

First of Its Kind

Sarkozy, who led the nation from 2007 to 2012, became the inaugural past president from the EU and the initial post-WWII figure of France to experience jail.

Prior to imprisonment he mentioned he intended to spend the period to compose an account.

Books in Prison

Unconfirmed is did he manage to review and analyze the three books he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books plus the novel by Dumas the classic tale, where a wrongfully accused individual is imprisoned later flees to seek vengeance.

Daily Reality

Sarkozy was held secluded to protect him in a cell of about nine sq metres including private facilities in the Paris jail in Paris. Security personnel stayed in a neighbouring cell.

It was stated that he had eaten only yoghurts in prison worried that meals provided might have been spat on. Options were available to cook for himself but he turned this down, based on unnamed sources. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about what he ate in prison.

Legal Perspective

His attorney, Christophe Ingrain every day during the incarceration, stated during proceedings his safety would improve released rather than in custody. “He has faced menacing messages, listened to yells at night plus rapid actions in an adjacent room during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Legal Proceedings

His incarceration began on 21 October when a Paris court gave him five years in prison for criminal conspiracy over a scheme to acquire campaign funds during his election campaign.

He disputes the charges challenging the decision, and another court case set for early next year.
