A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked ongoing concerns over safety standards.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
