The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating future games, but one in particular has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl harboring several personalities inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct souls, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed gameplay, much of the narrative takes place within a creepy medical facility, though additional clips depict the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Dread
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game delves into that concept — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will switch involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's anxieties become exaggerated and attack the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is populated by orderlies who all share the same face, with disturbingly broad smiles. Patients in the waiting room have enormous flowers where their necks are. Flowers are an ever-present element, contrasting organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the body belongs to them," notes a creator. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, since each soul can lie or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Maybe you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice states. "The last one remaining might be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
