The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: From Aspirations to Afcon Favourites.
When I walk into the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he won’t let go of throughout our chat. This serves as a simple symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.
His determination and raw talent won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest person to convince was not a sporting director or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” says Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to chase his path in the game. Another challenge was his modest frame, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.
However, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough
This move put him on a trajectory to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with him lifting the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.
A month later, he signed for Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived alone in Europe, a situation his family support to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions are not really a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His ball striking and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to control his aggression, after being shown red early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he jokes.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals
At Monaco, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.
On a potential future move to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the main top prize down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it instills confidence.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams targeting to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
