On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Rejecting advice to be modest, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my principles for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has sought to ease these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly productive.

The Fundamental Challenges of Leadership

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
