"Any idea when you're interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

However, there remains a single issue: The sender also longs to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're not alone. Several famous supporters have publicly petitioned for the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career doing sets at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the most iconic bands, they're a inseparable gang. Their music videos often feature them walking in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such unfettered happiness you inevitably think, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I got a guitar'," says Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the ultimate honor. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire people to start a band."

"And thus everyone gets an invitation to be the fourth member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The trio are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an lengthy tour in promoting their new album, I Quit.

They're right now processing the news it's been shortlisted for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like a surreal movie when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the nomination is deeply felt by the band.

"We really set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a huge achievement," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Heartbreak and Candor

The album emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music explores that strange liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The lyrics follow breakups and partings. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've experienced. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a slogan. You have to actively work on shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That developed confidence required a new sound – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that began with the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Camaraderie

The band's openness fueled the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"During these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Path

One can easily sense a change in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their standing in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide following.

Yet the band will consistently be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been performing since I was little," says Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really thankful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
