There are those on the left and right who offer only grievance: The government is proceeding with the job of economic rejuvenation.
At the budget last week, we made the right choices for Britain, lowering power bills with £150 off bills, protecting the NHS and combating the problem of impoverished children by scrapping the two-child restriction. We also ensured that the funds collected through taxes was done equitably, with all paying their share but those with the broadest shoulders contributing their fair share.
As a result of the choices we made, the budget established a firmer financial footing, reducing price increases and government bond yields. This is crucial for defending our public services, when £1 in every £10 spent by government goes on loan repayments.
Building on Economic Foundations
The budget builds on the action we have already taken to improve the economy: providing £120bn in extra capital investment in such things as roads, rail and energy; introducing significant overhaul measures in a generation to favor construction, not impediments; promoting the development of Heathrow and Gatwick; and establishing trading partnerships with the EU, India and the US.
In combination, these have allowed us to outperform our expansion estimates.
Rejuvenating Our State
As I explained at the party conference, the government’s purpose is nothing less than the renewal of our economy, our communities and our state. Via these methods, we will halt deterioration and rebuild trust in our country.
We will confront those on the political extremes who only offer complaints and whose approach would lead to further decline. I want to emphasize, turning on the borrowing taps or reimposing spending cuts – that is the approach of deterioration and I will not accept it.
A Comprehensive Growth Mission
In a speech on Monday, I will place the budget in context within the broader economic renewal on which the government will be judged at the end of this parliament.
To accomplish the national renewal we seek, we must do more to stimulate expansion, to tackle inactivity among young people and to aim for stronger worldwide collaboration with our trading partners.
Administrative Streamlining Program
Our growth mission will include a refreshed emphasis on removing superfluous red tape. Commonly it has fallen to those on the left who have supported restrictions, but there is nothing progressive in regulations which serve only to increase the cost of living for the poorest, to slow down economic growth unnecessarily, or prevent a Labour government achieving its aims.
That is why I am asking the business secretary to tackle the type of pointless gold-plating and needless paperwork that raise expenditures and get in the way of our industrial strategy.
Welfare State Modernization
Economic renewal also demands that we must continue to overhaul social security. We inherited a failing system that caused youngsters to lack basic nutrition and which dismissed adolescents as incapable of employment.
We should not endorse either part of that failing Tory system. That is why we will do more to support adolescents in reaching their abilities.
Since when individuals are overlooked in your early career, if you are refused the help you need to address psychological challenges, or if you are merely dismissed because you are neurodivergent or disabled, then it can trap you in a cycle of worklessness and dependency for decades.
This imposes financial burdens, is harmful to our efficiency, but considerably more crucially, it takes away opportunity and overlooks capability. Any progressive administration worthy of the name must not disregard this.
This is the reason we have tasked a previous healthcare official to make implementable proposals to help young people with medical issues obtain employment, training or education – guaranteeing they receive assistance to thrive and not sidelined.
Global Commerce Improvement
Ultimately, we must take further action to help our businesses conduct global commerce. No plausible financial outlook for Britain that does not position us as an open, trading economy.
We must confront the reality that the poorly executed departure agreement considerably harmed our commerce. You do not need to have a PhD in economics to know that erecting unnecessary trade barriers with your largest commercial ally will hinder development and boost prices.
Thus an aspect of our economic renewal will be continuing to move towards a enhanced business association with the EU. Should we obtain less expensive nourishment, improve development and produce work opportunities by having a stronger connection with Europe, we should.
A Meaningful Approach for Major Issues
A budget based on fair choices for Britain must be supported by resolve to achieve the financial revitalization that the country needs.
Via executing a major, confident protracted program, not a set of short-term remedies, we will rejuvenate the country. We need to transform once more a meaningful society, with a significant administration, competent jointly to perform demanding actions to reclaim command of our destiny.
Via possessing an unambiguous objective to rejuvenate our finances, our localities and our nation, we will execute the modification we committed to – and then be judged on it at the next election.
