Scorching conditions and intense bushfires have devastated the parched landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels forecast to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the next few days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been declared across a large portion of the southwestern region.

Widespread Heatwave Warnings Across the Region

This situation follow this month's bushfires in another state, which resulted in the loss of homes and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have also been activated for later this week in areas within SA and NSW, as a system of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, delivering intense sunshine to a broad swath of the area.

The mix of tinder-dry land and unbroken high temperatures creates a dangerous situation for firefighters.

Global Climatic Events Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a major city was plunged into blackout recently after strong winds compromised the city’s electrical network, with toppled trees knocking out electricity cables. The weather conditions also led to major travel disruption at a major airport, where numerous flights were grounded. Severe impact on power systems is expected to cause further problems as utility companies scramble to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million inhabitants.

Atypical Mist Covers Sunny Region

At the same time, a region famed for its clear skies and abundant sunlight has endured one of its grayest and foggiest weeks on recorded history. A particular form of fog, which usually lingers for only a few days, has been remarkably widespread and persistent this year, holding temperatures at a major airport under 8C for over a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The extended haze has been driven by exceptional fall precipitation that resulted in the ground saturated.

Storm Delivers Snow to Holiday Destination

And in Spain, a powerful storm has brought intense rain, strong gales and even snow to a set of islands – conditions many would not associate with this favored tourist spot. While snow is not unknown at elevated areas, the system brought some of the heaviest snow depths in 2016 to a national park, forcing its closure.

Alongside the snow, fierce northerly winds swept across the archipelago, with gusts reaching 50mph recorded on multiple locations. The influence of the storm is expected to diminish this week with more seasonal weather taking hold.
